Owls Sweep Bucs 6-1, 5-2

MEMPHIS-Visiting William Woods used a big first inning in each game as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs 6-1 and 5-2 Friday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Owls (4-2) scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead, and they used a three-run fifth to pull away to a 6-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Owls gave starting pitcher John Cavness all the run support he would need in the top of the first with two runs on a walk, a hit batter, a passed ball and a pair of singles.
• William Woods added a run to its lead in the top of the fourth inning with a run on two singles and a passed ball.
• The Bucs (3-3) shaved a run off the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Andrew Miller (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) launched a leadoff homer to center to cut the deficit to 3-1.
• The Owls added three more in the top of the fifth on three singles, an error and a sacrifice fly, setting the final margin at 6-1.

KEY STATS:
• Miller went 1-for-3 with a home run.
• Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) and Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) each went 1-for-3.
• Will Rutledge (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan HS) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, pitching around a single and a walk.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Owls used a four-run first inning to take control en route to a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Owls scored four runs in the first inning on a hit batter, an error, a double and two singles.
• CBU shaved a run off the lead in the bottom of the second. Goodwin was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a paassed ball. After moving to third on a Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) groundout, he scored on a wild pitch.
• WWU got the run back in the top of the third, capitalizing on two singles and a double.
• The Bucs set the final margin in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pala led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, coming home when Mattson smoked a double down the left field line.

KEY STATS:
• Mattson went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double.
• Halley was 1-for-3 with a walk, while Pala, Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) and Traylor were also each 1-for-3. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) went 1-for-4.
• Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) tossed two and a third scoreless innings of relief, with two strikeouts against a hit and a walk.
• Matthew Mills (Memphis, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) worked a perfect sixth with a strikeout.
• Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh.
