Errors Burn Bucs in 13-7 Loss

CLINTON, Miss.-Four Christian Brothers University errors led to seven unearned runs as host Mississippi College won 13-7 over the Bucs Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Choctaws (9-12, 3-9 GSC) opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first on two singles, a walk and a double.
• CBU (6-18, 0-13) pulled within a run in the top of the second. Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) led off with a walk, and he advanced to second on an error when Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) grounded into a fielder's choice. Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit an RBI single to score Mattson, and Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) laid down a squeeze bunt to bring Caleb Goodwin home.
• The Bucs took the lead in the top of the third. Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scoring when Christian Halterman (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyer County HS) doubled. Mattson reached and advanced to second on an error, moving Halterman to third. A Caleb Goodwin groundout scored Halterman, and Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) singled Mattson home to give CBU a 5-3 edge.
• MC scored a run in the third on a walk and two singles.
• The Choctaws took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the fourth as they plated six runs. After the inning started with two errors and a strikeout, the Choctaws plated six runs on a walk, two singles and a three-run homer by Garrett Odom.
• CBU shaved a run off the deficit in the sixth. Kilgore led off with a walk. After moving to second on a Jeff Goodwin single, he scored on an error after Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) grounded into a force play.
• The Choctaws scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on a double and another Odom homer.
• MC scored their final run of the day in the bottom of the seventh on an error after a single, an error and a double-steal.
• The Bucs set the final margin in the top of the eighth. Jeff Goodwin hit a leadoff double. After moving to third on a Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) groundout, he scored on a wild pitch.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs and Choctaws meet again for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Bucs return home next weekend for a GSC series as they host West Florida Friday and Saturday, with Friday's twinbill set for a noon start, and Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
