Bucs Split Sunday Twinbill

CLINTON, Miss.-The Christian Brothers University Bucs claimed a 6-4 win in the first game before host Mississippi College won the nightcap 5-4 Sunday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs (7-19, 1-14 GSC) rapped out a season-high 15 hits as they scored in each of the first four innings to build a 5-0 cushion, and they held on for a 6-4 win behind a strong start from Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs struck first with a run in the top of the first. Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) started the inning with singles. After Halley was caught stealing, Castleberry scored on a two-out Christian Halterman (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyer County HS) single.
• The Bucs tacked on another in the second. Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) led off with a double, and singles by Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) loaded the bases with no out, setting up a Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) sacrifice fly.
• CBU added two runs in the third inning. Halterman led off with a single, and Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) reached on an error. A groundout moved them to second and third, and a two-run single by Smith gave the Bucs a 4-0 cushion.
• The Bucs extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Jeff Goodwin led off with a walk. Halley singled to right, moving Goodwin to third. After Halley was out when Castleberry grounded into a force play, Goodwin scored when Castleberry was caught stealing second.
• The Choctaws (10-13, 4-10) broke through in the sixth with a run on aisngle, a stolen base, an error and a sacrifice fly.
• MC closed within a run with a three-run seventh inning, taking advantage of a single, two errors and a double.
• CBU added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. A Castleberry single and walks to Halterman and Caleb Goodwin loaded the bases, and Smith was hit by a pitch to score Castleberry.

KEY STATS:
• Sanderlin threw eight and a third innings, allowing four unearned runs on six hits and three walks, striking out six.
• Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) induced a game-ending double play after a one-out error, sealing his first career save.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning, but a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Choctaws to a 5-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Choctaws struck first with a run in the bottom of the third on a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt.
• The Bucs took the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs. Halley reached on a dropped third strike and moved to second on a Castleberry sacrifice. Casey Goodwin singled to move him to third, and Goodwin moved to second on a wild pitch. Another dropped third strike allowed Halterman to reach, and a wild throw brought Halley home and sent Goodwin to third. Mattson grounded into a force play to plate Goodwin, and the Bucs led 2-1.
• MC answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a double and a single.
• The Choctaws added what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the fifth, scoring a run on on a double, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 edge.
• CBU tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth. Halley and Castleberry started the inning with back-to-back singles, and a Halterman walk loaded the bases. A passed ball brought Halley home, and a wild pitch plated Castleberry to tie the game.
