Argos Sweep Bucs

MEMPHIS-Visiting West Florida swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Argos (18-11, 12-5 GSC) used a seven-run fourth inning and a four-run eighth inning to blow open what had been a close game and claim a 13-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Argos struck first with a run in the top of the first on a walk, two singles and a bases-loaded groundout.
• UWF doubled its advantage in the third inning with a run on a single and a double.
• The Bucs (7-21, 1-16) drew within a run in the bottom of the third. Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led off with a single to center. He came around to score on a two-out Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) triple to center.
• The Argos pulled away with a seven-run fourth inning, taking advantage of three singles, three walks and a three-run homer by Jean Figueroa.
• UWF set the final margin with four more in the eighth on two singles and four doubles.

KEY STATS:
• Castleberry went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI.
• Jeff Goodwin was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice.
• Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) went 1-for-2.
• Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was 1-for-2 with a walk.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Argos scored nine runs in the final three innings to pull away for an 11-3 win as Figueroa drove in six.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Bucs again came within a 2-1 margin, this time in the bottom of the second inning. Christian Halterman (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyer County HS) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. A Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) single and a Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) walk loaded the bases for Smith, who drove Halterman in with a groundout.
• The 2-1 score held until the top of the fifth, when a pair of singles set the stage for Figueroa, who blasted another homer, this time to center.

• CBU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth. Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led off with a single, and he scored on a Mattson double to center. Caleb Goodwin followed with an RBI single through the left side.
