CLEVELAND, Tenn.-Host Lee pulled away to a 15-2 win in game one and held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
• The Flames (26-14, 15-9 GSC) scored two or more runs in four different innings as they won 15-2 in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Lee struck for three in the first inning on two singles and two doubles.
• The Flames added five in the fourth, taking advantage of three walks, two hit batters, two errors and three singles.
• The Bucs (8-31, 1-25) broke through for a pair of two-out runs in the fifth.
Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on a two-out single, and a
Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single and a
Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) walk loaded the bases.
Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) followed with a two-run single up the middle.
• Lee added a run in the sixth on a walk, a hit batter, a single and a sacrifice fly.
• The Flames tacked on two more in the seventh on a pair of solo homers by Ben Holland and Luke Toms.
• Lee ended the game with four in the bottom of the eighth as Toms hit a grand slam after a double, a walk and a single loaded the bases with no out.
KEY STATS:
• Castleberry went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.
• Kilgore was 1-for-3 with a run.
• Goodwin went 1-for-3 with a run.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Each team homered once in game two for all the game's runs, with Lee using a two-run shot in the third and the Bucs a solo shot in the sixth for a 2-1 Lee win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Flames scored two runs in the bottom of the third on a leadoff single and a two-out Toms homer to center.
• The 2-0 score held until the top of the sixth, when
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit a two-out homer down the right field line. After the homer, Castleberry reached on an error and
Andrew Miller (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) singled him to third, but a popout ended the threat.
• The Bucs threatened again in the top of the seventh.
Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) led off with a single, and
Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) legged out an infield single. After
Hunter Howard (Chelsea, Ala./Chelsea HS) sacrificed them to second and third,
Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) worked a seven-pitch walk to load the bases. Flames closer Kyle Briner induced a game-ending double play to end the threat.
