Flames Hold Off Bucs 9-4

CLEVELAND, Tenn.-Host Lee took an 8-1 lead and withstood a late Christian Brothers University rally as they handed the Bucs a 9-4 defeat Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Flames (27-14, 16-9 GSC) scored twice in the first inning on a single and a two-run homer by Trenton Hill.
• Lee added two more in the second inning on two singles and a double.
• The Bucs (8-32, 1-26) answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) hit a one-out double to right-center. After moving to third on a balk, he scored on a Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) groundout.
• The Flames added four runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of three hit batters, a walk and two singles.
• CBU rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth. Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) was hit by a pitch with one out, and Goodwin worked a two-out walk. After they stole second and third, both scored on a Smith triple. Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) followed with an RBI single to bring Smith home and cut the deficit to 8-4.
• A one-out solo homer by Ben Holland in the bottom of the eighth set the final score at 9-4.

KEY STATS:
• Goodwin was 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks.
• Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) went 2-for-5.
• Castleberry was 1-for-3 with a run.
• Keppen went 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.
• Smith was 1-for-4 with a triple, a run and three RBI.
• Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) went 1-for-4.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs open their final homestand of the season Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Blue Mountain.
