Lions Sweep Bucs

MEMPHIS-Visiting North Alabama swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field as they rallied for a 6-4 win in the opener and pulled away for a 15-2 margin in the second game.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs (9-34, 1-28 GSC) carried a 3-1 lead into the sixth and a 4-3 lead into the ninth, but North Alabama (23-20, 14-15) scored three in the top of the ninth to claim a 6-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UNA opened the scoring with a run on a single, a groundout and an RBI single in the top of the first inning.
• The Bucs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on an error and moved to second on a Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) single. after Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) sacrificed them to second and third, a Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) groundout scored Halley to tie the game.
• CBU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) led off with a single. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was hit by a pitch, and Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) worked a walk to load the bases. Halley pushed one run across with a bases-loaded walk, and Castleberry hit a sacrifice fly to score Smith.
• The Lions knotted the game in the top of the sixth with a single and a one-out two-run homer by Taylor Hayes.
• The Bucs regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dodd led off with a double, and pinch-runner Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) moved to third on a wild pitch, scoring on a Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) sacrifice fly.
• UNA answered quickly in the top of the ninth as Kyle Hubbuch hit a leadoff homer to tie the game. After a single, three walks pushed across the eventual winning run, and a wild pitch gave the Lions a 6-4 lead and the Bucs were unable to capitalize on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth.

KEY STATS:
• Dodd was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
• Pala went 2-for-4 with a run.
• Castleberry was 1-for-4 with one RBI.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lions used a seven-run fourth inning to blow the game open on their way to a 15-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UNA struck for a run in the first inning on a wingle, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.
• The Lions added another run in the third on a pair of singles and a stolen base.
• UNA scored seven in the top of the fourth on four walks, an error, two singles and a double.
• The Lions added three more in the top of the sixth on a single, a walk and a three-run Hubbuch homer.
• The Bucs scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out pinch-hit walk by Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) followed by a pinch-hit homer to right by Andrew Miller (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS).
• UNA set the final margin with three more in the top of the seventh on a single and three doubles.

KEY STATS:
• Halley went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
• Miller was 1-for-1 with a homer and two RBI.
• Dodd went 1-for-2.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs celebrate Senior Day with their final home game of the season at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Senior Day ceremonies are set for 12:45 p.m.
