Overtime Penalty Sinks Bucs in First-Place Battle

LIVINGSTON, Ala.-A penalty in the ninth minute of the first overtime gave host West Alabama a 1-0 victory over the Christian Brothers University Bucs and sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The only goal came in the 99th minute as UWA's Alvaro Macias drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty. He converted for the golden goal to give the Tigers (11-2-0, 7-1-0 GSC) a 1-0 win.

KEY STATS:
• UWA out-shot the Bucs (7-5-1, 6-2-1) 14-11 for the game, with each team taking six shots on goal.
Viktor Hoestbo (Stenloese, Denmark/Oesterhoejskolen) made five saves for the Bucs.

GSC STANDINGS:
With the win, UWA assumes sole possession of first place with 21 points, and the Bucs drop into a tie with Mississippi College for second place with 19 points. Alabama Huntsville is in fourth with 17 points, followed by Lee (14), Montevallo (12) and Union (9). The top six advance to the GSC Tournament. The quarterfinals will be Tuesday, Oct. 31, hosted by the No. 3 and 4 seeds, with the semifinals set for Friday, Nov. 3 in Montgomery, Ala., and the championship Sunday, Nov. 5, in Montgomery.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs wrap up the GSC schedule with two home games next weekend. They face West Florida Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on Spring Hill Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
