Toppers Rally Past Bucs 8-3 in Season Opener

MEMPHIS-Visiting Blue Mountain took advantage of two Christian Brothers University errors to score five runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-3 win Wednesday afternoon in the season opener for both schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs (0-1) opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) led off with a double down the left field line, and he scored on a Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single. After Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch, he and Halley moved to second and third, and both scored when Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) singled down the left field line.
• Blue Mountain (1-0) trimmed two runs off the lead in the top of the third with two runs on three singles and a sacrifice bunt.
• The Toppers took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring five runs on two singles, three doubles, a stolen base and two errors.
• BMC set the final margin with a run in the seventh on a pair of singles with a sacrifice bunt.

KEY STATS:
• Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run for the Bucs.
• Mattson was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
• Goodwin went 1-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, and a run.
• Halley was 1-for-5 with a run and one RBI.
• Patrick Gurley (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) threw two scoreless innings, pitching around one single.
• Gabe Brooks (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook HS) threw a scoreless eighth inning in his college debut.
• Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) tossed a perfect ninth with a strikeout. He also went 1-for-4 at the plate as he played the first eight innings in right field.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs return to action Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Lindenwood to open a three-game series. The Bucs and Lions also meet at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
