MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored four runs in the first inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Lindenwood Friday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lions (0-1) struck first with three runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of three walks and two singles.
• CBU (1-1) answered with four two-out runs in the bottom of the frame.
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) led off with a double down the left field line.
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit a two-out single to left, and both scored when
Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) doubled into the gap in left-center.
Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) drove Mattson in with a single to left. After moving to third on an error, King scored on a wild pitch to put the Bucs ahead 4-3.
• Lindenwood tied the game in the fourth inning with a run on two walks and an error.
• The Bucs regained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) was hit by a pitch, and
Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on an error. They moved to second and third on a double-steal, and singles by Smith and Halley brought them home.
• The Lions halved the CBU lead in the top of the ninth inning, scoring off a pair of groundouts after a leadoff error, but Sanderlin induced a third groundout to earn his first career complete game.
KEY STATS:
• Sanderlin allowed five runs, three earned, as he scattered eight hits and six walks over nine innings. He struck out six batters in the game.
• Smith went 3-for-5 with a run, a stolen base and one RBI.
• Goodwin was 3-for-4 with a run.
• Halley finished 2-for-5 with one RBI.
• King was 1-for-4 with a run and one RBI.
• Mattson finished 1-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI.
• Keppen went 0-for-1 with a run, a walk and two hit batters.
