Bucs, Cougars Split Saturday Twinbill

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs claimed an 11-4 win over Columbia Saturday in game one, but the visiting Cougars took a 6-3 win in the second game to split the doubleheader.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) went 4-for-4 with a double, a grand slam, three runs and six RBI as the Bucs (3-5) rolled to an 11-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Cougars (3-3) opened the scoring with a run in the first on a walk, a single and a sacrifice fly.
• The Bucs knotted the game in the bottom of the second. King led off with a single and moved to second on a Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) single. A Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) sacrifice pushed them to second and third, and King scored on a Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) groundout.
• CBU took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning. King hit a one-out double and moved to third on a wild throw, scoring on a Cramer single to center.
• The Bucs blew it open with a six-run fifth inning. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was hit by the inning's first pitch, and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on a one-out error. Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) followed with an RBI single to right, and King blasted the next pitch over the fence in left-center to give the Bucs a 7-1 lead. Cramer kept the inning going as he was hit by a pitch. After moving to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a Pala single to extend the lead to 8-1.
• Columbia plated a run in the sixth on a double and a pair of wild pitches.
• CBU scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Mattson single. A wild pitch pushed them to second and third, and King's RBI single up the middle extended their lead to 10-2.
• Cramer scored another run for the Bucs in the bottom of the seventh. He led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, scoring on a Pala double to right-center.
• The Cougars set the final margin in the top of the eighth with two runs on a single and an Andrew Warner two-run homer.

KEY STATS:
• King went 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, three runs and six RBI. He recorded CBU's first six-RBI game since Yogi Vanaman drove in seven April 3, 2010 at Harding. His four-hit effort was CBU's first since Mac Cooley had four hits against Mississippi College Feb. 13, 2015, and he was the Bucs' first player to score three runs since Casey Goodwin did it Feb. 13, 2016, against William Woods. He finished with eight total bases, the first CBU player with eight total bases since Braden Keathley March 12, 2013, against Williams Baptist.
• Cramer was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
• Mattson went 2-for-4 with two runs and a hit batter.
• Pala was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
• Halley was 0-for-2 but drew two walks, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
• Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. He struck out six in seven innings.
• Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief, allowing one walk.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Three Columbia pitchers combined to hold the Bucs to four hits as they claimed a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led off with a single and moved to second on a Halley groundout. He stole third and scored on a wild throw up the line.
• Traylor gave CBU a 2-0 lead in the third inning. He worked a two-out walk. After moving to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a Halley single.
• The Cougars tied the game in the top of the fourth with two runs on a walk, a double, a single and two errors.
• Two walks and another error brought in the go-ahead run for Columbia in the top of the fifth inning.
• The Cougars scored three more runs in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of three singles, a double and a squeeze bunt.
• The Bucs shaved a run off the deficit in the seventh. King led off with a single and moved to second when Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) drew a pinch-hit walk. King stole third and scored on a Pala single, and Halley worked a two-out walk to load the bases, but a groundout ended the game.

KEY STATS:
• Traylor was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs.
• Halley went 1-for-2 with two walks and one RBI.
• King went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
• Erwin threw four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks in four innings.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs and Lions meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the Bucs' final tune-up before opening GSC play against Valdosta State next weekend.
