MEMPHIS-Senior first baseman
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 10-9 win in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs (5-6, 1-1 GSC) used an eighth-inning two-run homer by
Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) to tie the game and a ninth-inning walk-off homer by Goodwin to claim a 10-9 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Blazers (8-3, 1-1) opened the scoring with two runs in the first on a walk, a double and a single.
• CBU tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning. Singles by
Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy),
Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) and
Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) loaded the bases with one out.
Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) worked a bases-loaded walk, and
Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) drove King in when he grounded into a force play.
• The Bucs took the lead in the bottom of the third. Goodwin singled with one out, and a Mattson walk and a
Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) single loaded the bases with one out. King followed with an infield single to score Goodwin, and Kilgore hit a two-run single to give the Bucs a 5-2 edge.
• King extended the Bucs' lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth when he hit a leadoff homer to center.
• VSU stormed back in front with a five-run sixth inning on four singles and two doubles to take a 7-6 lead.
• The Bucs tied the game back up in the bottom of the inning. Goodwin drew a leadoff walk. After stealing second, he moved to third on a Dodd sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch brought him home with two out to tie the game.
• The Blazers regained the lead in the top of the seventh with two runs on a walk, a single, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
• CBU tied the game again in the bottom of the eighth. Dodd worked a leadoff walk, and King followed with a a two-run homer to center to tie the game.
• The bottom of the ninth only lasted one pitch, as Goodwin blasted the first pitch he saw over the right-field fence for his first career walk-off homer.
KEY STATS:
• King went 4-for-5 with two homers, three runs and four RBI.
• Goodwin was 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, a stolen base, a walk, three runs and one RBI.
• Kilgore went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
• Papa was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
• Mattson went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs.
• Dodd was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) earned the win as he threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit against one strikeout.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Blazers scored in four of the game's seven innings, including a three-run fourth, as they won 7-1 behind a two-hitter by Austin Hamilton.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• VSU took the lead in the top of the second with a run on two doubles.
• The Blazers added three runs to their lead in the fourth inning as they opened the inning with five straight singles.
• The Bucs scratched out a run in the bottom of the inning.
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was hit by a pitch. A
Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single and a Goodwin walk loaded the bases, and Mattson scored on a double play ball.
• VSU added another run in the top of the fifth with a triple and a single.
• The Blazers set the final margin in the top of the seventh with a run on a walk and a two-run homer by Dalton Murray.
KEY STATS:

• Halley went 1-for-3.
• Smith was 0-for-1 but drew a walk, scored a run and was hit by a pitch.
