Bulldogs Sweep Bucs

JACKSON, Tenn.-Host Union swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 11-2 before winning 5-1 in the nightcap.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Union (13-1, 5-0 GSC) converted 18 hits into 11 runs as they pulled away quickly.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bulldogs plated five runs in the first inning on two singles, two doubles, a walk and an error.
• The Bucs (5-9, 1-4) scored a run in the top of the second. Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) reached on a one-out single and stole second, scoring on a Scott Pala (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) double to right-center.
• Union scored three more in the bottom of the third on three singles and a double.
• The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fifth on a one-out homer by Hayden Lewis.
• CBU scored a run in the top of the sixth. Singles by Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy), Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) loaded the bases with none out. Cramer scored Mattson with an RBI groundout, but a double play ended the threat.
• Union added a run to its lead in the seventh on a single, a walk and a double.
• The Bulldogs set the final margin with a run in the eighth on two singles and a sacrifice fly.

KEY STATS:
• Cramer went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, a run and one RBI.
• Pala was 1-for-2 with a double.
• Dodd went 1-for-3.
• Mattson was 1-for-4 with a run.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Union scored twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth to take a 5-1 win and complete the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bulldogs struck first with two runs in the fourth on a single, a triple and a balk.
• Union extended its lead to 5-0 in the sixth on two singles, a fielder's choice, a passed ball and a wild pitch.
• CBU scored a run in the top of the seventh. Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on a one-out single and moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches. He scored on a Parker Jordan (Southaven, Miss./Briarcrest Christian HS) infield single with two out.

KEY STATS:
• Kilgore was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.
• Jordan went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
• Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was 1-for-3.
• Patrick Gurley (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) took the loss as he allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and a walk. He struck out nine over six innings.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs and Bulldogs meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bucs return home for games at home against Maryville Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, with both games set for 1 p.m. starts.
