Bucs’ Rally Falls Just Short in 6-5 Loss

MEMPHIS-In Saturday's second game, the Christian Brothers University Bucs scored three runs in their last chance to force extra innings and eventually win. Sunday, they needed three in the bottom of the ninth and they scored a pair of two-out runs, but they ran into the third out on the bases and visiting Mississippi College held on for a 6-5 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Choctaws (6-18, 4-10 GSC) opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth inning on a double and four singles.
• MC extended its lead to 5-0 in the sixth with a run on an error, a single and a two-out double.
• The Bucs (9-18, 3-11) shaved two runs off the deficit in the bottom of the sixth. Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) singled and moved to second on an error, and he moved to third on a Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) single, with Mattson taking second on the throw. A wild pitch brought Goodwin home and sent Mattson to third, and Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) drove Mattson in with a single.
• The Choctaws picked up what proved to be a decisive insurance run in the top of the ninth on a hit batter and a two-out double.
• CBU took a run off the deficit in the eighth. Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout. After Kilgore reached on a two-out error, Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) singled King home.
• The Bucs rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Hunter Howard (Chelsea, Ala./Chelsea HS) worked a one-out walk, and he moved to third on a Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) single to right. Smith moved to second on a Jeff Goodwin groundout, and both scored when King doubled down the right-field line. With Mattson batting, King was tagged out when he overslid third base trying to move up on a wild pitch, ending the game.
