No. 13 Statesmen Sweep Bucs

MEMPHIS-No. 13 Delta State scored 37 runs Saturday as they swept the Christian Brothers University Bucs 22-8 and 15-3 at Nadicksbernd Field.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Statesmen (24-8, 15-5 GSC) scored 14 runs in the second inning en route to a 22-8 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• DSU struck first with a run in the top of the first on two singles, a hit batter and a walk, all with two out.
• The Statesmen blew it open with 14 in the second on six singles, three doubles, two walks, a hit batter and a pair of homers, a grand slam by Zack Shannon and a three-run shot by Clay Casey. 
• CBU (9-25, 4-16) broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third. Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) drew a leadoff walk, and a Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and a Taylor King (Water Valley, Miss./Water Valley HS) hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) drove Keppen in when he reached on an error, and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) followed with a two-run single to plate King and Smith.
• DSU added three more in the top of the fourth on a triple and an error.
• The Statesmen added four more in the fifth, taking advantage of two doubles, two singles and three walks.
• The Bucs set the final margin with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Blain Curtis (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton Rosemark Academy) was hit by a pitch, and Parker Jordan (Southaven, Miss./Briarcrest Christian HS) followed with a single. Jake Tribble (Springville, Ala./Springville HS) scored Curtis with a single to left. After Trevor Goetsch (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was hit by a pitch, pinch-runner Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), running for Jordan, scored when Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) grounded out. Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) reached on an error, scoring Goetsch and Tribble, and Keppen scored on a Nick Traylor (Germantown, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single.

KEY STATS:
• Casey Goodwin went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
• Hunter Howard (Chelsea, Ala./Chelsea HS) was 1-for-2 with a double.
• Smith went 1-for-4 with a run.
• Tribble was 1-for-1 with a run and one RBI.
• Traylor went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
• Keppen was 0-for-3 but walked and scored two runs.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Statesmen scored nine runs in the last two innings as they pulled away to a 15-3 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs scored first with a run in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles by Jeff Goodwin and Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) put runners on the corners for Casey Goodwin, who drove his brother in with a sacrifice fly.
• DSU took the lead with a three-run second, taking advantage of a walk, an error and two singles.
• The Statesmen added a run in the fourth on a triple and a single.
• DSU scored two runs in the fifth on a walk and two singles.
• CBU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Smith led off with a walk, and Keppen followed with a single. After a Michael Halley (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) groundout moved them to second and third, Jeff Goodwin singled to bring both home.
• The Statesmen plated five runs in the sixth on a walk, six singles and an error.
• DSU set the final margin with four runs in the seventh on a walk, four singles and a double.

KEY STATS:
• Jeff Goodwin went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
• Keppen was 1-for-2 with a run.
• Angley-Holman went 1-for-3 with a walk and a steal.
