Bucs Tie School Strikeout Record in 6-5 Win

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs tied a school record set nearly 50 years ago with 17 strikeouts as they built a 6-1 lead and held on for a 6-5 win at Rhodes Tuesday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs (1-5) struck for four runs with a one-out rally in the top of the first. #T.J. Klutts# started the rally with a one-out walk in the top of the first, and Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) reached on a two-base error, moving Klutts to third. Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) scored Klutts when he singled on a blooper to left. A wild pitch moved Dodd and Cramer to second and third, and Jaime Soto (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) blasted a three-run homer to left on the next pitch to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead.
• Rhodes (4-4) scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a double, a single and a wild pitch.
• CBU restored the four-run lead in the top of the second as Parker Jordan (Southaven, Miss./Briarcrest Christian HS) blasted a homer to left on the first pitch of the inning.
• The Bucs extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth. Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) led off with a single to left, and he scored on a two-out double by Cramer.
• The Lynx drew within two runs in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases on two singles and a walk and scoring on a three-run double.
• Rhodes shaved the deficit to one run in the botom of the ninth, scoring a run on three singles, but Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) struck out the last batter of the game to seal the victory and earn his first save of the season.

KEY STATS:
• Jordan went 2-for-3 with a homer, a run and one RBI.
• Dodd was 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI.
• Soto went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a homer, a run and three RBI.
• Cramer was 1-for-4 with a double, a run and one RBI.
• Blake Dallas (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) threw two innings of relief, striking out two as he pitched around a hit and two walks.
• Erwin earned the save, allowing one run in three and a third innings, striking out six against four hits and a walk.
• Garrett Dooley (Atoka, Tenn./Millington HS) picked up the win, striking out four in two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
• Nick Myers (Collierville, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) struck out four in an inning and a third, and Jacob Barney (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) recorded one strikeout in a third of an inning.

NOTABLE:
• The Bucs' 17 strikeouts tied a school record set April 30, 1969 against Union in a complete game performance by Bill Brown. Nadicksbernd Field namesake Joe Nadicksbernd was CBU's catcher that game.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Weather permitting, the Bucs are set to return to action with a three-game series this weekend as they host William Jewell. Single games are set for 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a noon game scheduled for Sunday.
