MONTEVALLO, Alabama-The Christian Brothers University Bucs split a doubleheader at Montevallo Friday afternoon in their Gulf South Conference opener, winning 3-2 in the first game before dropping a 2-0 decision in the nightcap.
GAME 1:Â
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs (3-8, 1-1 GSC) built a 3-0 lead, and
Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) went the distance as the Bucs claimed a 3-2 win in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
•
Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) put the Bucs on the board first with a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning.
• CBU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth. After
Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) drew a leadoff walk, Cramer followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center. Cramer moved to third on an infield single by
Parker Jordan (Southaven, Miss./Briarcrest Christian HS), and he scored on a
Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) sacrifice fly.
• The Falcons (9-4, 1-1) plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and two doubles.
• Sanderlin brought it home from there for the Bucs, pitching out of a jam in the sixth then retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced from the seventh on
KEY STATS:
• Sanderlin pitched a gem, throwing a complete game as he allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk against eight strikeouts.
• Cramer went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI.Â
• Jordan was 2-for-3 with a walk.
• Angley-Holman went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

Larry Hubbard (Collierville, Tenn./St. George's Independent HS) went 1-for-3 with a walk.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Montevallo scored two runs in the first inning, and pitcher Alex Pondick threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts as they handed the Bucs a 2-0 defeat in the nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Montevallo scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first on a dropped third strike, a triple and a single.
KEY STATS:
• Hubbard went 1-for-3 for the Bucs.
• #T.J. Klutts# was 1-for-2.

Gil Erwin (Covington, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) took the loss despite allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over six innings, striking out eight.
