HUNTSVILLE, Alabama-Host Alabama Huntsville used a big second inning in each game as they swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Chargers (13-8, 7-4 GSC) scored four in the second and held on as the Bucs (6-17, 1-10) drew within a run in the ninth in a 4-3 game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UAH opened the scoring with four runs in the second on two triples, a single and a two-run Tyler McCown homer.
• The Bucs broke through with a run in the sixth.
Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) worked back from a 1-2 count to draw a leadoff walk, moving to second on a
Jaime Soto (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) single and then third on a
Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) sacrifice bunt. A
Larry Hubbard (Collierville, Tenn./St. George's Independent HS) sacrifice fly scored him.
• Goodwin scored again in the eighth, reaching on a one-out bunt single and moving to second on a wild throw. He scored when Soto singled to right.
• CBU came within a run in the ninth. Back-to-back singles by
Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and
Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) started the inning, with Dodd scoring on a two-out
Keagan Voss (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single, but a groundout ended the game.
KEY STATS:
• Goodwin went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.
• Soto was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
• Angley-Holman went 2-for-3.
• Cramer was 2-for-3 with a double.
• Voss went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) took the loss despite throwing a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks against 10 strikeouts over eight innings.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
UAH scored two in the second inning and pitcher Hunter Hood threw a four-hit shutout to complete the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UAH gave Hood all the run support he needed with two runs in the second on a single, a triple and an RBI groundout.
• The Chargers scored an insurance run in the fifth on four singles.
KEY STATS:
• Hubbard was 2-for-3.
• Cramer went 1-for-3.
• Soto was 1-for-3 with a double.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs and Chargers meet again tomorrow at noon for the third game of the series. CBU's next home game is Saturday, March 24, when they host West Alabama for a noon doubleheader.
