MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University senior righthander
Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn., Collierville HS) made the most of his final appearance, throwing a 13-inning complete game to lead the Bucs to a 5-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader split against Union Saturday at Nadicksbernd Field.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Sanderlin threw a 13-inning complete game, the second-most innings pitched in a game in both GSC and CBU history, to lift the Bucs (11-37, 5-24 GSC) to a 5-4 win in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Walks to
Jared Cramer (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS),
Brandon Dodd (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and
Luke Wewers (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) loaded the bases with one out for
TJ Klutts (Atoka, Tenn./Brighton HS), who scored Cramer with a sacrifice fly.
• CBU extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning with three doubles.
Jeff Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) opened the inning with a double down the left-field line, and
Jaime Soto (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) followed with a double to right-center to move Goodwin to third. A one-out double to left from Cramer cleared the bases and gave CBU a 3-0 lead.
• Union (16-32, 9-20) tied the game with three in the sixth on three doubles and an error.
• The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth on a single, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out error.
• The Bucs kept the game alive with a ninth-inning rally of their own.
Keagan Voss (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) opened the inning with a single to right. After moving to second on a Goodwin sacrifice bunt, he scored on a two-out single by
Taylor Angley-Holman (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) to send the game to extra innings.
• After Sanderlin pitched around leadoff singles in the 11th and 12th innings, CBU won it in the 13th. Klutts started the inning with a double to left, and bunt singles by Voss and Goodwin loaded the bases for Soto, who blasted a single off the fence in left for the game-winning run.
KEY STATS:
• Sanderlin pitched a career-high 13 innings, allowing four runs, just two earned, as he scattered eight hits and one walk against nine strikeouts.
• Soto went 3-for-6 with a walk, a double, a run and one RBI.
• Goodwin was 2-for-6 with a double, a sacrifice and a run.
• Angley-Holman went 2-for-6 with one RBI.
• Voss was 2-for-5 with a hit by pitch and a run.
• Jordan went 1-for-3 with a walk and two sacrifice bunts.
• Cramer was 1-for-5 with a walk, a run and one RBI.
• Klutts went 1-for-5 with double, a sacrifice fly, a run and one RBI.
NOTABLE:
• Sanderlin's 13 innings are the second-most in CBU history. CBU Hall of Famer Tom Turner threw a 14-inning complete game April 20, 1978, in a 9-8 win over Lambuth.
• His 13 innings in a game are also second-most in GSC history. Scot Shields set the record when he pitched 16 innings for Lincoln Memorial against Montevallo in 1996. Shields went on to pitch 10 seasons for the Los Angeles Angels, including winning the 2002 World Series.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Union built early leads of 3-0 and 6-3, and they held on for a 7-5 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bulldogs opened the scoring with two runs in the first on a walk, two singles and an error.
• Union added a run in the second on a single and a double, both with two out.
• CBU tied it with a three-run bottom of the second. Cramer led off with a single. After Dodd sacrificed him to second, he scored on a
Jake Tribble (Springville, Ala./Springville HS) single.
Luke Wewers (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) doubled to left to move Tribble to third.
Trevor Goetsch (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) plated Tribble with a groundout, and Voss scored Wewers with an infield single to tie the game.
• The Bulldogs regained the lead with a three-run third inning on two doubles, two singles and a run-scoring double play.
• The Bucs shaved a run off the deficit in the bottom of the third. Soto led off with a double to left, and Angley-Holman reached on an error. A double play erased Angley-Holman but moved Soto to third, and he scored on a wild pitch.
• CBU closed within a run in the fourth when they scored on a two-out rally. Goodwin hit a two-strike, two-out triple down the right-field line, and he scored when Soto doubled to the fence in left on the next pitch.
