Bucs Fend off West Florida to Earn Gulf South Conference Win

MEMPHIS - The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team used a late 13-5 scoring run to fend off visiting West Florida, on Monday night at Canale Arena. The Bucs went on to defeat UWF 64-55 for its first Gulf South Conference victory, and the first under the direction of new head coach John T. Reilly.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A Nick Deifel layup put the Bucs up seven points (23-16), with 8:06 left in the half. This was the biggest margin CBU held for the rest of the half. 
  • Mitchell Mays beat the buzzer with a bucket in the paint to take the Bucs to the locker room with a 27-21 lead.
  • CBU finished the first half with a commanding 14-2 advantage in points in the paint. 
  • The Bucs stretched the lead to 11 points at one point in the second half, but West Florida narrowed the margin to 42-41 with 8:48 left. 
  • CBU used its big 13-5 scoring run (3:29 minutes remaining) to hold off the Argonauts' comeback effort, and held on for the win.  


KEY STATS | NOTABLES:

  • Daryl Lewis led the offensive attack for the Bucs, finishing with a career-high 21 points. 
  • Deifel recorded a double-double in the contest as he tallied 12 points and 10 boards. He also added four assists and two steals.
  •  Mays also finished the contest with double digit points (11).
  • CBU's defense held the Argonauts to just 16-of-50 from the field (32 percent).
  • The Bucs recorded 24 more points in the paint than UWF (34-10).

  • The Bucs continue their home play Sat., Nov. 30th, when they are scheduled to take on Freed-Hardeman University at 3:00 p.m.
