No. 1 Bellarmine Pulls Away From Bucs

MEMPHIS - The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team made a season high 12 three pointers, but it was not enough as No. 1 Bellarmine shot 65 percent, and pulled away for an 81-63 victory, on Wednesday night at Canale arena. 


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the opening minutes, CBU used an impressive 16-6 scoring run led by Daryl Lewis (8 points), to jump out to a 19-12 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first half.
  • The Knights wasted no time in making a comeback. Bellarmine recorded its share of scoring runs in the remainder of the first half as it went into the half with the 11 point advantage over the Bucs (45-34).
  • Bellarmine used strong paint play to outscore the Bucs 26-10 in the first half. 
  • With 14:44 remaining in the contest, a made jumper from Dylan Penn extended the Knights' lead to 18 points (58-40).
  • Jaret Gassett scored on a fast break, coming from a nice feed from Mikeil Watkins, with 10:45 left in the game, to bring the Bucs to 12 points from the lead, which is the closest CBU got to the lead for the rest of the contest.
  • Bellarmine closed the game on a 9-3 scoring run to finish the scoring.

KEY STATS | NOTABLES:

  • Brad Miller and Daryl Lewis led the offensive attack for the Bucs with 15 points. 
  • Lewis was a stat sheet stuffer as he recorded 15 points, four steals, three assists, two blocks and two rebounds.
  • Nick Deifel tallied 14 points and eight assists.
  • Miller and Deifel both sunk four three pointers in the contest.
  • Both teams shot the ball extremely well, but the Knights were more efficient as they shot 64.6 percent (31-of-48) from the field. The Bucs finished the contest shooting 51.1 percent (24-of-47).
  • CBU converted 12 of its 21 three point attempts. 
  • Bellarmine finished the game with a commanding 51-22 edge in points in the paint.

  • The Bucs travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on Gulf South Conference foe Lee, on Saturday., Dec. 21st. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
