JACKSON, Tenn. – In the regular season finale, the Christian Brothers University men's basketball team escaped out of Jackson with a 76-73, over Union, on Thursday in DeLay Gymnasium. With the win, the Bucs secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament, and will host No. 5 Delta State, on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bucs (19-9, 14-6 GSC) started slowly, as they fell behind the Bulldogs (16-12, 11-9 GSC) 6-0 in the first four minutes.
- CBU took its first lead with 12:17 remaining in the first half, when Adam Dieball drained a three-pointer to take a 12-10 lead. The Bucs maintained the edge shortly, as the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 run to retake the lead.
- Union led by as many as 12 points (29-17) in the first half. However, CBU closed the half on a 15-2 run, led by Dieball, who scored nine points in that stretch.
- While the Bulldogs tried to take control at the outset of the second-half, scoring the first five points, CBU did not blink, scoring nine of the game's next 11 points to hold a slight edge. Both teams traded buckets for much of the game and neither team could hold more than a four point lead.
- In the closing minutes, the Bucs maintain a four point lead, but back-to-back three pointers from Union allowed it to take a slight edge. That's when Dieball, as he did all night, shouldered the offensive burden and scored layups on consecutive possessions for CBU to give it a one-point lead.
- Brad Miller iced the game, with a couple of clutch free throws under a minute left, to help seal the victory.
KEY STATS:
- Dieball posted a season-high with 32 points, converting on 14-of-19 field goal attempts, to go along with nine rebounds and five assists.
