Bucs Earn Historic Win Over No. 1 Delta State; Split Doubleheader


MEMPHIS, Tennessee- The Christian Brothers University Bucs defeat No. 1 Delta State for the first time since 2002, but splits the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.


GAME 1: CBU (7-15, 4-9 GSC) 7, Delta State (17-4, 9-3 GSC) 4

GAME CHANGER
  • Kyle Hindman scorched a double to left field, in the second inning, to cap off a big five run inning which gave the Bucs the lead they held for the rest of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Nick Myers earned his first win of the season, while DSU's starter, Hunter Riggins, earned his first loss.
  • Both teams combined for 10 errors in the game. Each team committed five.
  • CBU's starter, Gil Erwin, tossed 4.2 innings, while allowing only four hits and two earned runs.
  • The Bucs outhit the Statesmen 8-5.
  • Jared Cramer and Hindman finished with two RBI's a piece.
  • Garett Reason-Kerkhoff tallied a game-high three hits.

KEY PLAYS
  • The Bucs got on the board first, in a big way, as a Jeff Goodwin single, a Reason-Kerkhoff single, a Hindman double, and a throwing error gave them the 5-0 lead at the end of the second inning. 
  • CBU extended their lead to seven, in the fourth inning, when the Statesmen committed three errors and J.D. Goodspeed grounded out to short to bring in a run.
  • Delta State answered back in the following inning when they strung together a few hits, which led to two runs (7-2).
  • DSU continued to chip away in the seventh and eighth as they brought home a run in each inning, but at that point it was too little too late (7-4). 


GAME 2: Delta State (18-4, 10-3) 9, CBU (7-16, 4-10) 2

GAME CHANGER
  • The Statemen's starter, Melvin Frazier, threw 6.1 innings, while allowing only two hits, two earned runs, and striking out six CBU hitters.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • DSU outhit CBU 12-2.
  • Cramer's single in the seventh inning extends his hitting streak to three games.
  • A total of six runs were scored in the sixth inning.
  • Four Delta State hitters finished the game with multiple hits.


KEY PLAYS
  • Both teams brought home a run in the first inning (1-1).
  • Delta State took the lead, in the third inning, when they capitalized off of a CBU wild pitch and throwing error (2-1).
  • The Statesmen extended their lead to four when they plated two more in the fifth inning (4-0).
  • Delta State ran away, in the final inning, as they tacked on five runs to close out their 9-2 victory.

  • The Bucs look to win the series against Delta State Sunday, March 16th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
