Bucs Fall in Twinbill Against Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Georgia- Christian Brothers University and Valdosta State performed well at the plate, but it was the Blazers who came away with the big hits when needed which led to a twin bill sweep Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: Valdosta State (22-17, 10-11 GSC) 8, CBU (8-27, 4-18 GSC) 4

GAME CHANGER
  • A three run seventh inning by the Blazers gave them the separation they needed to come away with the game one victory. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eight of the nine CBU starters reached base safely. 
  • Gil Erwin recorded his second complete game of the season. 
  • The Bucs outhit Valdosta State 11-8.
  • J.D. Goodspeed led the Bucs' offense with three hits, while Kyle Hindman and Garett Reason-Kerkhoff tallied two a piece. 
  • Jeff Goodwin recorded two runs batted in.
  • Both teams combined for 19 runners left on base. CBU left 14 on base, while VSU left five.

KEY PLAYS
  • The Bucs got started out with a bang, in the second inning, when Reason-Kerkhoff singled home a run and Goodwin followed with a two run single (3-0).  
  • Valdosta State answered back in the following inning when they capitalized off of three hits, which plated three runners (3-3).
  • Jared Cramer didn't want the game to stayed knotted up for long as he knocked in the go ahead run in the fourth frame (4-3).
  • In the fifth inning, a Blazer solo home run tied things back up (4-4).
  • Valdosta State rounded out the scoring of the game as they plated three runs in the seventh and a single run in the eighth (8-4). 


GAME 2: Valdosta State (23-17, 11-11) 10, CBU (8-28, 4-19) 9

  GAME CHANGER
  • Valdosta State's second baseman, Jowenrick Daantji, doubled home the game winning run in the bottom of the final frame to secure the 10-9 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • A total of 16 hitters were walked in the contest. VSU walked 11 and CBU walked five.
  • No pitcher in the contest threw more than two innings.
  • The Blazers outhit the Bucs 11-7.
  • Eight of the nine CBU starters reached base safely. 
  • Luke Wewers and Cramer both tallied two RBIs in the contest.
  • 17 runners were left on base.
  • Keagan Voss and Cramer managed to walk three times a piece.

KEY PLAYS
  • The Bucs got off to a good start when Larry Hubbard and Bailey Jones walked with the bases juiced followed by a Wewers hard hit single (5-0).
  • The Blazers bounced right back, in the second inning, when they erupted to put seven spot on the scoreboard (7-5).
  • CBU recorded four hits in the third inning, which helped them bring home four runs and retake the lead (9-7).
  • VSU used back-to-back key base hits, in the bottom of the third,  to knot things up at nine.
  • The Blazers were walk-off winners as Daantj doubled home the game winning run in the bottom of the final frame (10-9).

WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Bucs wrap up the series against Valdosta State on Sunday, April 14th. The series finale is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
