Bucs Drop Season Opener, in Overtime, to Union

MEMPHIS - Union outscored the Christian Brothers University men's basketball team 31-27 in the second half, and 14-10 in overtime, to earn a 74-70 win, on Friday night, at Canale Arena. 

The game marked the season opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors led by as many as 10 points in the opening half (18-8), but the Bucs outscored them 18-11 to take a 33-29 lead at halftime. 
  • With 16:02 left, CBU opened its lead to 39-32 on a pair of free throws by Christian Jones
  • Union fought back, and regained the lead, pushing its advantage to 56-48, with five minutes left. 
  • Tyree Boykin knocked down a pair of free throws, with 30 seconds left, but Jones nailed a three pointer, with nine seconds left, to force overtime. 
  • The Bucs had a brief two point advantage in overtime, but Union scored five of the final seven points to earn the win. 

KEY STATS | NOTEABLES:
  • The three pointer from Jones broke a cold streak that saw the Bucs miss their first 18 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Bulldogs shot 46 percent (25-of-54) from the floor. 
  • CBU finished the game 45 percent from the floor (29-of-64), which includes a 2-for-22 effort from long-range. 
  • The Bucs were 27-of-42 from inside three the three point line.
  • CBU finished with a 36-30 edge on the boards. 
  • CBU was 10-of-14 from the free throw line, while Union was 19-for-25.
  • In his first game at CBU, Tennessee Tech transfer Garrett Golday finished with a team-high 19 points.
  • Aiden Ruthsatz (13), Christian Jones (11) and Daniel Loos (10) rounded out the double figure scorers for CBU. Loos, who made his collegiate debut, also added seven rebounds and a team high five assists.  
  • Union has now claimed three straight over the Bucs.

  • The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Dec. 12, when they have a rematch with Union. TIpoff is set for 2 p.m.
