Bucs Drop Closely Contested Doubleheader at Shorter

ROME, Ga. –  After earning a 10-3 victory in the opener, Shorter came from behind to earn a 5-4 victory in the nightcap, in a Gulf South Conference sweep of the Christian Brothers University baseball team, on Friday, at Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.


GAME ONE: SHORTER 10 (17-8, 14-8 GSC ) CBU 3 (2-20, 2-19 GSC) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
Shorter starting pitcher Jonathan Pintaro struck out 15 CBU batters in seven innings of work. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Shorter outhit the Bucs 10-5. 
The Hawks recorded five of their hits in the eighth inning. 
Will Turner finished 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.
J.D. Goodspeed added an RBI double. 
CBU starting pitcher Travis Cole allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. 

KEY PLAYS:
Shorter got on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI double. 
The Hawks added a pair in the sixth, when they took advantage of a CBU miscue. 
In the eighth, the double by Goodspeed cut the lead to 3-1. 
Shorter put the game away when it sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs, in the eighth. 
CBU scored a pair in the ninth when Turner homered to right field. 

NOTEABLES:
The home run for Turner was the first of his career. 
The eight strikeouts for Cole are a career-high. 
 
GAME TWO: SHORTER 5 (18-8, 15-8 GSC ) CBU 4 (2-21, 2-20 GSC) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
Shorter scored three of its five runs after four CBU miscues. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Shorter outhit the Bucs 11-9. 
J.D. Goodspeed led CBU hitters, as he finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. 
Keagan Voss finished 2-for-5 
Luke Wewers was 1-for-3 with a double. 
Payne Smith was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. 
CBU starting pitcher Blake Dallas allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. 

KEY PLAYS:
After Shorter took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Bucs answered with the two-run home run from Smith. 
In the fifth, CBU increased its lead to 4-1 after an RBI single from Goodspeed and a sac fly from Reid Voss
Shorter answered in the bottom half of the inning when, after the leadoff batter reach via error, it got a two-run homer from Matt Christian. 
The Hawks tied the game at four, in the seventh, when it scored following an error. 
CBU had a pair of runners on in the ninth, including one in scoring position, but was unable to capitalize. 
After Shorter started the bottom of the ninth by reaching safely on an error, and a sac bunt the Bucs were forced to intentionally walk the next two batters. 
Jakob Woods hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but the double play attempt was broken up, helping the Hawks score the game-winning run. 

NOTEABLES:
The home run for Smith was the first of his career. 
In his last three starts, Dallas has gone a combined 19.2 innings, while allowing just six earned runs with 22 strikeouts.

The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they finish their series with Shorter. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
