Late Home Run Helps Lead Bucs Past #12 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. -  An eighth inning go-ahead home run by Ben Brocato helped lead the Christian Brothers University baseball team to a 5-4 victory over No. 12 Valdosta State, on Saturday evening, at Billy Grant Field.

This win marked the first for CBU over the Blazers since February 18, 2017, and its first at VSU February 22, 2014.

GAME CHANGER:
- Ben Brocato launched a solo home run to break a 4-4 tie in the eighth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- CBU finished with a 10-9 advantage in hits.
- Six Bucs recorded a hit.
- Ben Brocato led the Bucs, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. 
- Jarret Fowlkes finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. 
- Kelton Castillo and Matthew McDaniel drove in the othter CBU runs. 
- CBU starting pitcher Travis Cole allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts in five innings of work.
- Joseph Gibson worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second save of the season. 

KEY PLAYS:
- The Blazers capitalized on a Bucs miscue to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. 
- The Bucs tied the game at three, in the fourth, on an RBI-single by Matthew McDaniel
- In the fifth, Brocato ripped an RBI-single through the right side to give the Bucs a 4-3 lead. 
- The Blazers tied the game at four when David Crawford drew a bases-loaded walk.
- Brocato led off the eighth with a home run to give the Bucs the lead.
- With one out In the eighth the Blazers had the tying run on third base, but Gibson got a pair of outs to end the threat.  
- With the winning-run on first base, Gibson retired the last two batters, giving the Bucs the win.

NOTEABLE:
- With the win over VSU, the Bucs have five wins in GSC play, which through 16 games, is tied for the most since the 2018 and 2019 seasons. 

UP NEXT:
The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, April 3, when they wrap up their series at Valdosta State. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 11:30 AM CT.
