Bucs Use Big Innings to Defeat Rhodes

MEMPHIS - The Christian Brothers University baseball team scored six runs in the final two innings to earn a 7-5 victory, on Wednesday afternoon, at Stauffer Field. 

The victory, for CBU, stopped a two-game skid against its nearby foe. 

FINAL SCORE: CBU 7 (5-3) RC 5 (3-1)

GAME CHANGER:
Trailing 3-1, in the eighth, the Bucs plated four runs to take a 5-3 lead. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Rhodes finished the contest with a 10-4 advantage in hits. 
  • CBU reached base safely eight times due to hit by pitch. 
  • Four different Bucs finished with one hit each. 
  • Shahkai Matthews and Logan Wurm finished with two RBIs apiece. 
  • CBU used six different pitchers in the contest. 
KEY PLAYS:
In the first, CBU took advantage of three hit by pitch when Dalton Pyzer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. 
Rhodes answered back with a run in the first and a pair in the second. 
The Lynx led 3-1 until the eighth, when Matthews roped a two-RBI single that scored Seth Brown and Charlie Faoro
CBU added to its lead when Logan Wurm scored on a passed ball. 
As it did earlier in the contest, Rhodes answered back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run. 
The Bucs took advantage of an error to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
A sacrifice fly by Wurm gave CBU an insurance run going into the bottom of the ninth.
Jack Staples retired Rhodes in order in the ninth.  

UP NEXT:
The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Friday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Auburn Montgomery for their Gulf South Conference opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.
