Late Run Helps Delta State Defeat Bucs

MEMPHIS – Visiting Delta State used a late 16-2 run to defeat the Christian Brothers University men's basketball team 80-68, on Sautrday afternoon, at Canale Arena. 

The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bucs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chris Terrell hit a three-pointer to give DSU a 23-17 lead with 10:14 left in the first half. 
  • The Bucs responded with a 17-9 run to take a 34-32 lead three minutes before halftime. 
  • A Maalik Cartwright dunk, with two seconds left, gave the visitors a 37-36 lead at the break. 
  • The Statesmen were 15-30 from the floor in the first half, while the Bucs were 15-32. 
  • Seven of the 15 DSU makes were from three-point range. 
  • DSU opened the second half with a quick 8-2 run, but the Bucs responded with 11 straight points to take a 49-45 lead with 15:20 left. 
  • An Anias Futrell dunk gave CBU a 57-52 lead with 10:13 remaining.
  • After another dunk from Futrell made the score 64-63, stopping a 12-2 DSU run, with 6:32 left. 
  • DSU then went on a 16-2 run, over the next 5:30 to help it win the game.  
KEY STATS | NOTEABLES
  • DSU knocked down 14 of its 35 three-point shots. 
  • The Statesmen were 41-65 from the floor (48 percent), while the Bucs were 29-62 (47 percent)
  • CBU was just 3-11 from three-point range. 
  • CBU dominated the boards 43-27.
  • Four Bucs scored in double-figures, led by Anias Futrell who finished with 21 points and nine boards. 
  • Madison Monroe added a season-high 18 points and nine rebounds. 
  • Jailen Anderson (15) and Christian Thompson (14) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Bucs. Thompson also added nine rebounds.

CBU is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when it hits the road to face GSC leader West Georgia. Tipoff is set for 6:30 PM CT.
