CBU earns a draw versus Delta State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University men's soccer team (2-3-2, 0-1-2 GSC) earned a 1-1 draw against Delta State (2-2-4, 1-1-2 GSC) on Friday night at Signaigo Field. The Buccaneers went ahead early with a penalty kick goal and held on until the 88th minute when the Statesman found the equalizer.

OF NOTE
  • Graduate student Harry Laing (Gillingham, UK) scored his third goal of the season and is now the Bucs' leading goal scorer.
  • Christian Brothers went ahead of Alabama Huntsville and Union in the league table with the point earned from the draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CBU drew a penalty kick in the 13th minute from Delta State's Micah Soper's unruly tackle inside the 18-yard box. Laing stepped up to take the PK and slotted the shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, 1-0. The opposing keeper dived in the opposite direction.
  • The Bucs faced five shots from Delta State in the first half, but none of them came close to finding their target.
  • The intensity of the match turned up in the second half with seven cautions being issued in total. Four were issued to CBU while three were shown to the Statesmen.
  • Shots flew back-and-forth from both sides in the final 45 minutes. Christian Brothers took six shots, four of which required a save to be made. Meanwhile, Delta State took nine shots in the second half, only two of which were on target.
  • In the 88th minute, the Statesmen were awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area. Delta State's Santi Rossi was able to curl a low shot around the wall of defenders and into the left side of the netting to level the score, 1-1.
