Bucs Storm Back to Defeat Union

MEMPHIS – The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team erased a 15-point second half deficit in an 83-77 win over Union, on Thursday night, at Canale Arena.

With the win, the Bucs swept the season series from their in-state rivals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At the midway point of the first half, with the Bucs trailing 19-11, a jumper by Christian Jones cut the deficit to six.
  • Union outscored CBU 17-10 the rest of the way to take a 45-33 lead at the half. 
  • The visitors hit 17 of their 38 shots (45 percent), including 7-18 from beyond the three-point line. 
  • CBU was limited to just 34 percent (11-32), and hit just one of its seven three-pointers.
  • Less than 20 seconds into the second half, Devaki Garr knocked down a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 48-33 lead. 
  • The Bucs responded with a 26-11 spurt to tie the game at 59, at the midway point of the second half. 
  • CBU then scored the next seven points to take a 66-59 lead, with 7:44 left. 
  • After Ahmad Johnson scored to cut the CBU lead to 74-72, with three minutes left, the Bucs scored the next seven points to earn the win. 
KEY STATS | NOTEABLES
  • The physical contest saw 40 combined fouls and 53 free throws. 
  • The Bucs were 23-37 from the free throw line. 
  • CBU dominated the paint, outscoring the visitors 40-28.
  • The Bucs also had a commanding 53-39 rebounding advantage. 
  • After a 34 percent shooting effort, in the first half, CBU shot 17-32 (53 percent) in the final 20 minutes. 
  • Jailen Anderson led CBU with a game-high 18 points. 
  • Madison Monroe (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Christian Thompson (12 points, 13 rebounds) both finished with double-doubles. Thompson also added five assists from his center position. 
  • The double-double for Monroe is the first of his CBU career. 
  • Christian Jones and Anias Futrell finished with 15 points an seven rebounds apiece. Jones added five assists.

CBU is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, Feb. 8 when it travels to Valdosta State. Tipoff is set for 7 PM CT.
