Bucs Power Past Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Christian Brothers University baseball team powered its way past Montevallo, 17-4 (7), in the opening game of a Gulf South Conference series, on Friday afternoon, at Bob Riesener Stadium. 

The 17 runs are the most for CBU in a GSC contest since it defeat Arkansas-Monticello 21-3 in 2008. 
 
FINAL SCORE: CBU 17 (6-6, 2-2 GSC) UM 4 (8-4, 0-1 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER: 
The Bucs scored five runs in the first inning, and never looked back. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 
  • CBU finished with a commanding 21-7 edge in hits. 
  • Seven CBU hits were for extra-bases including three home runs. 
  • All nine CBU starters had at least one hit. 
  • Seven Bucs recorded at least two hits. 
  • CBU starting pitcher Charlie Faoro went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts. 
  • Mitsuki Kohno and Cory Steinhauer both went 4-5 with a double. Kohno led CBU with three RBIs. 
  • Gabe Walker was 3-5 with a double and two RBIs. 
  • Royal Hobson, Ben Brocato and Clay Facteau had home runs. 
KEY PLAYS: 
CBU sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five runs on five hits. 
With the Bucs leading 3-0, Kohno drove in a pair to extend the lead to 5-0. 
The Bucs added four more in the second inning that was highlighted by a two-run home run from Facteau. 
CBU put up six more in the fourth using a two-RBI single from Dalton Pyzer, a two-run home run from Brocato and the two-run double by Walker. 
In the fifth, a two-run home run by Hobson extended the lead to 17-1. 
The Falcons scored three in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to extend the contest. 

NOTEABLES: 
  • The 17 runs are the most given up by Montevallo since it allowed 23 to Auburn Montgomery in 2021
  • The 21 hits are the most for CBU since it had the same amount against Drury last season. It is also tied for the highest total by a GSC team this season. 
  • Brocato has hit a home run in four straight games. 
  • The complete game for Faoro is the first of his collegiate career. 
  • CBU has earned a win at Montevallo in each of its last two trips.  
UP NEXT: 
The Bucs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they finish the series at Montevallo. First pitch is set for noon.
