Bucs Earn Split In Close Contests Against Union

MEMPHIS – The Christian Brothers University baseball team split a pair of close contests against Union, on Saturday afternoon, at Nadicksbernd Field. The Bucs completed the comeback in game one to win 9-8 and fell just short 3-4 in game two. 

GAME ONE: CBU 9 (9-11, 4-6 GSC)  UU 8 (8-12, 3-7 GSC)

GAME CHANGER:
A Cory Steinhauer sacrifice fly scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • CBU had a 15-10 advantage in hits.
  • Dalton Pyzer led the way going 4-5 with a triple and three RBIs.
  • Ben Brocato went 3-5 with a double and an RBI.
  • Matthew McDaniel added two RBIs, going 2-5 with a double.
  • The CBU pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and left nine Bulldogs stranded.
KEY PLAYS:
Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the third.
CBU used a four run third inning, highlighted by a Dalton Pyzer two RBI triple, and RBI single from Ben Brocato and Clay Facteau to lead 4-3.
The Bulldogs regained an 8-4 lead with a four runs in the fifth.
A Gabe Walker sacrifice fly brought in a run for the Bucs in the fifth to trail 5-8.
Matthew McDaniel doubled in the seventh to score two runs and bring the score to 7-8.
A Pyzer RBI single tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the eight, then Cory Steinhauer hit a sacrifice fly to score the game winning run.


GAME TWO: UU 4 (9-12, 4-7 GSC) CBU 3 (9-12, 4-7 GSC)

GAME CHANGER:
The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs in their first six trips to the plate. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: KEY PLAYS:
The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs after the top of the sixth.
Ben Brocato singled to drive in the Bucs first run of the day in the sixth.
Clay Facteau reached to bring in CBU's second run of the inning, trailing 2-4.
Carson McCaleb hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 3-4.
 
NOTEABLES:
The homerun for Carson McCaleb was the first of his career.
Royal Hobson has stolen 21 bases this season, leading the NCAA across all divisions.
Hobson is also on a 15 game hit streak.

UP NEXT:
The Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 10, for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
