Sending off proves costly for Bucs in match against Saint Leo

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University men's soccer (2-2-0) was defeated by Saint Leo (1-3-1) by a final score of 3-2 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Memphis Sports and Events Center. The Bucs went up 2-1 early in the second half, but had their fortunes reversed by two late goals after going a man down.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Julian Carreira opened his goal-scoring account at CBU with a header in the 16th minute. Sophomore Russell Brown provided the cross that Carreira converted into a goal.
  • Saint Leo equalized 10 minutes later with a goal from Anel Rojas. Virgilio Escala delivered the assist.
  • Each team managed to take two more shots in the remaining 20 minutes of the first half. Only Harry Laing's shot in the 40th minute required a save to be made.
  • Christian Brothers's Lauri Orava scored two minutes into the second half to put his team on top, 2-1. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
  • The wind was taken out of the Buccaneers' sails in the 60th minute when starting goalkeeper Vicent Sanchis Olmedo was shown a red card for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity.
  • CBU was forced to play a man down for the remaining 30 minutes of the match.
  • The Lions dominated possession after gaining the man advantage. Nevertheless, the Bucs defense withstood the increasing pressure for more than 20 minutes.
  • In the 82nd minute, Saint Leo finally broke through with the game-tying goal.
  • The game-winning goal came for the Lions in the 88th minute and left no time for Christian Brothers to recover.
