Men's Soccer picks up a point at Union in conference opener

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University men's soccer team (2-2-1, 0-0-1 GSC) played to a 1-1 draw with Union (3-1-1, 0-0-1 GSC) on Friday night at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. The Buccaneers were clearly the dominant side with 12 shots, four on target, in the match compared to four shots, two on goal, taken by the Bulldogs.

COACH'S REMARKS

"The lads were absolutely fantastic tonight," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Enda Crehan. "After last weekend's hurricane events, it was a superb performance tonight away to a very good Union team. I couldn't be more proud of these lads. Up the Bucs!"

OF NOTE
  • Sophomore Daniel Moreno Gomez scored his second goal of the season to help his team earn a point in the Gulf South Conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Only 11 minutes into the match, winger Alexander Blanche was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down inside the 18-yard box. Blanche struck the ball well on the run up, but was denied by Union's Patrick Schott who guessed right with his dive.
  • In the 39th minute, Moreno intercepted the ball near the halfway line and dribbled through a slew of UU defenders. He broke into the 18-yard box and slotted a shot with his right foot into the bottom left corner of the goal, 1-0.
  • The Bulldogs equalized in the 44th minute off a ball played in from a corner kick. The ball bounced around inside the six-yard box until Union's Christian Harjanne was able to redirect it into the back of the net, 1-1.
  • The Bucs did not allow Union to take a single shot in the entire second half. Meanwhile, CBU pressed on in a worthy attempt to find the game-winning goal.
  • In the final 20 minutes of the contest, Christian Brothers took four shots to keep the Bulldogs on their heels. Shots by Moreno and Harry Laing both required saving. Lauri Orava's and Phillip Jauch's shots in the last 10 minutes just missed the mark.
