The lead slips away from Christian Brothers late at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Christian Brothers University men's soccer team (2-3-1, 0-1-1 GSC) was defeated by Mississippi College (4-3-1, 2-2-0 GSC) by a final score of 3-2 on Monday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The Bucs gained the lead in the 78th minute only to be undone by two late goals.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Senior Vincenzo Giordano scored his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career,
  • Junior Alexander Blanche scored his second goal of the season. He now leads CBU with five points on the season (four points from two goals and one point from an assist).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match was fiery from the start. Two yellow cards were issued, one to each side, within the first 10 minutes.
  • Mississippi College's Alvaro Pena scored in the 13th minute to put the Choctaws up by one early.
  • The remainder of the first half was scoreless. CBU took eight shots in the opening 45 minutes, with two on target, while Mississippi College shot five times with only one on goal.
  • Giordano equalized in the 53rd minute of the match. A set piece from out wide was sent into the box for a calculated finish from Giordano.
  • Christian Brothers was shown a red card in the 64th minute and played the rest of the contest a man down.
  • Nevertheless, the Bucs gained the lead in the 78th minute with a goal from Blanche. He collected a long ball, sidestepped a defender, and finished with his left foot into the left side of the netting, 2-1.
  • The Choctaws leveled the score in the 85th minute with a goal from Lewis Matton. Matton then assisted on the game-winning goal from Denis O. John.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. when they host Delta State.
