Eight Years Later: Coach Spurgeon Sparks a CBU Volleyball Revival

Christian Brothers University Volleyball has officially turned the page, and the author of this new chapter is first-year head coach Lashaunda Spurgeon, who has guided the Lady Bucs back to the playoffs for the first time in over eight years.

When Spurgeon arrived in Memphis, she brought with her a blueprint built on discipline, intensity, and belief. She coaches hard, demanding precision in every drill, accountability in every rep, and heart in every point. And while the standard is high, the results speak loudly: CBU Volleyball is back in the postseason.

Her journey hasn't been a solo mission. Assistant coach Giovana Costarelli has been the backbone behind the scenes, building game plans, developing players, and matching Spurgeon's fire with her own strategic brilliance. Together, the duo has reshaped the culture in a single season.

This year's roster, anchored by only three seniors, could have easily been labeled a rebuilding year. Instead, it became a proving year. The seniors set the tone, and the underclassmen followed, grinding through early morning practices, long workouts, and film sessions that stretched well into the evening. Every athlete bought in. Every athlete got better. And every athlete played a role in breaking an eight-year drought.

From the first serve of the season to the last huddle before playoffs, the Lady Bucs played with a new confidence, faster, tougher, and more connected. Their hustle on defense, their resilience under pressure, and their chemistry on the court became the identity of this revived program.

Coach Spurgeon promised change. The team delivered it.

Now, as CBU steps into the postseason spotlight, they do so with pride, knowing their journey wasn't luck, wasn't chance, but the product of sweat, sacrifice, and unwavering belief.

A new era of CBU Volleyball has begun. And it's only the beginning.
