CBU’s impressive comeback against Northwest Missouri State unravels in the ninth

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University baseball suffered a tough late-inning loss Friday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field, as Northwest Missouri State erupted for seven runs in the ninth to hand the Bucs an 11-5 defeat.

Christian Brothers (3-1) held a 5-4 lead heading into the final frame, but Northwest Missouri State (2-3) capitalized on walks and timely hitting to swing the momentum in their favor, leaving the Bucs stunned.

Chipping Away at an Early Lead

After falling behind 4-0 through one and a half innings, Christian Brothers responded in the bottom of the second by cutting the lead in half. Andrew Reed drew a walk with the bases loaded before Cory Steinhauer's groundout allowed a second run to score, 4-2.

In the fourth, Logan Croley's RBI single closed the gap to one run, 4-3.

In the seventh, the Bucs regained the lead with another two-run frame. Steinhauer laced a triple to bring Reed around before Gabe Walker allowed Steinhauer to score by putting the ball in play, 5-4.

Bearcats' Late Surge

The floodgates opened in the top of the ninth. The Bearcats sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on four hits. Three CBU pitchers were needed to get out of the half inning.

Christian Brothers was unable to mount a response in the bottom half, sealing the 11-5 defeat.

Gamboa Gives CBU a Fighting Chance

CBU's AJ Gamboa tossed 6.2 innings without being charged with a run and struck out eight Bearcats. He only allowed four hits during his time on the mound. His dominant performance paved the way for the Bucs to eventually take the lead in the bottom of the seventh.
