Memphis, TN- A furious late push nearly erased an early deficit, but Christian Brothers came up just one run short in a 10–9 loss to Henderson State on April 21.
Henderson State seized control early, exploding for six runs in the second inning. RBI singles from Caleb Bryant, Nate Moore, and Tripp Campbell set the tone before Tanner Ross capped the inning with a two-run homer to give the visitors a commanding 6–0 lead.
Christian Brothers chipped away in the fourth. Cayden Freels drove in a run with a single, and Jordan Rodriquez followed with an RBI knock to cut the deficit to 6–2. However, Henderson State answered with insurance runs in the sixth and a three-run seventh inning, stretching the lead to 10–2.
Despite trailing by eight entering the eighth, Christian Brothers refused to fold. Will Gossett sparked the rally with a solo home run, and Freels added an RBI double. William Norris followed with a run-scoring single to trim the margin to 10–5.
The Buccaneers saved their best for the ninth. With the bases loaded, Norris worked a walk to bring in a run, and Rodriquez delivered the biggest hit of the night—a three-run double that brought Christian Brothers within one at 10–9. The comeback bid, however, stalled there, as Henderson State recorded the final out to escape.
Rodriquez led the charge for Christian Brothers, finishing with two hits and four RBIs. Freels added two hits and two RBIs, while Gossett homered and scored twice. Norris also contributed two RBIs in the late innings.
Christian Brothers out-hit Henderson State 15–13, but the early six-run hole proved too much to overcome.
