Guerrero Named Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach at Christian Brothers University

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University Athletics has announced the hiring of Gil Guerrero as the new head coach of the Buccaneers men's and women's golf programs.

A veteran coach with more than four decades of experience developing golfers and building successful programs, Guerrero arrives at CBU with a proven track record of competitive success, academic excellence, and a passion for mentoring student-athletes on and off the course.

"I appreciate the opportunity to continue coaching," Guerrero said. "I've always believed that academics come first. My goal is to help our student-athletes become good people, earn their degrees, and be successful long after their playing careers are over."

Guerrero said the opportunity to continue making a difference in the lives of student-athletes is what continues to fuel his passion for coaching.

"I still coach because I have the desire to win," Guerrero said. "But just as important, I enjoy helping players take the next step in their careers, whether that's continuing to compete at a higher level or preparing them for success in life."

Guerrero comes to CBU after serving as the head men's and women's golf coach at Lourdes University since 2014, where he transformed both programs into consistent competitors while emphasizing academic achievement.

During his tenure, Lourdes posted the nine best men's team scoring averages in program history, including a school-record 304.2 in 2016-17. Guerrero coached the program's individual scoring record-holder, its first Team All-WHAC men's golfer and numerous all-conference honorees.

His teams also excelled academically, combining for 16 NAIA Scholar Team honors and producing 48 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 57 WHAC All-Academic selections.

Previously, Guerrero led Owens Community College to three conference championships and NJCAA National Championship appearances, earning OCCAC Coach of the Year honors three times while coaching an NJCAA All-American and multiple Academic All-Americans.

Dr. Jackson expressed excitement about the future of the Buccaneers' golf programs under Guerrero's leadership.

"Coach Guerrero brings an outstanding combination of experience, integrity, and a student-first philosophy that aligns perfectly with the mission of Christian Brothers University," Dr. Jackson said. "His commitment to academic excellence, competitive success, and mentoring young men and women makes him an exceptional fit for our athletics department."

With a coaching philosophy centered on developing champions both on the course and in the classroom, Guerrero is eager to begin building relationships with the Buccaneers and leading both programs into their next chapter.

"I'm excited to get to work," Guerrero said. "We're going to compete, we're going to work hard, and we're going to represent Christian Brothers University the right way, both on the golf course and in the classroom."

The Buccaneers will begin preparations for the upcoming season under Guerrero's leadership immediately.
