Buccaneers Battle Union in Sunday Home Matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Christian Brothers University men's soccer team delivered a scompetitive effort Sunday afternoon at Signaigo Field, recording 14 shots and 10 shots on goal in a closely contested matchup against Union University.

The Buccaneers generated offensive pressure throughout the contest, particularly in the opening half. CBU registered six shots and four corner kicks during the first 45 minutes.

Union opened the scoring in the 37th minute, but the Buccaneers responded just minutes later. Christopher Armitage found the back of the net in the 44th minute to even the score at 1-1. Elliot Whalley was credited with the assist on the play.

CBU continued to apply pressure during the second half, outshooting Union 8-3 over the final 45 minutes. The Buccaneers also earned six corner kicks in the second half and finished the match with 10 total corner opportunities.

Alessandro Merlo led the Buccaneers with three shots, including two shots on goal. Armitage, Whalley, Giulio Astesano, Jarrod O'Keefe, Wouter Ederveen, and Daiki Ebihara were among the CBU players who recorded shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Grant Clothier made two saves for the Buccaneers.

Union scored the eventual deciding goal in the 78th minute as the match concluded with a 2-1 final score. Despite the result, the Buccaneers demonstrated their ability to create consistent offensive opportunities, finishing with a significant 14-4 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Buccaneers will look to carry their attacking momentum into their next contest.
