MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs clinched a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Harding.
The Bucs (9-5-1, 4-1-0 GSC) ran their winning streak to six games as they used a goal on each side of the halftime break to take a 2-0 lead, and they held on for the 2-1 victory.
Andrew Ballard (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) opened the scoring in the 44th minute as he found the net after a cross from
Rasaq Kuteyi (Lagos, Nigeria/Mansfield (TX) Summit High School). In the 48th minute,
Brenden Ross (Toronto, Ontario/Father Michael Goetz HS) scored to put the Bucs ahead 2-0 as he beat the defender and fired a rocket into the net, but the Bisons (5-9-2, 2-3-0) would cut the lead in half on a 58th-minute Jay Skinner goal.
With the win, the Bucs clinch a top-three seed in the GSC Tournament Nov. 7-9 at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla. The Bucs are in second place with eight points, two behind Montevallo for the top spot and a point ahead of No. 18 West Florida. The Bucs have one GSC game left, at home against Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
The Bucs clinch the No. 2 seed with a win or a tie Wednesday or a West Florida loss or tie against Montevallo Friday night. Montevallo has already clinched the No. 1 seed by beating the Bucs last month.
After Wednesday's GSC finale with UAH, the Bucs have two non-conference games. They host Crichton Saturday night at 7 p.m. before ending the regular season Monday, Nov. 3, with a trip to Martin Methodist.
