Bucs Clinch Second With 1-1 Tie

Gordon Blum scored the Bucs' only goal in a 1-1 tie against Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday night.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs clinched second place in the Gulf South Conference as they tied Alabama-Huntsville 1-1 in two overtimes Wednesday night at Signaigo Field.

Early on, the Bucs (9-5-2, 4-1-1) appeared ready to run away with the game as Gordon Blum (Houma, La./Vanderbilt Catholic HS) won a loose ball in traffic in the box and quickly fired a shot into the net to give CBU the game's first goal in just the seventh minute.

The Bucs kept the pressure on, peppering UAH (2-10-4, 1-2-3) keeper Tyler Earley with shot after shot, but the Charger keeper made seven first-half saves to keep UAH in the game despite being out-shot 13-1 in the opening half.

The Chargers scored the equalizer in the 71st minute as Oscar Leon launched a long shot that curled into the top-left corner for the tie.

The Bucs turned up the pressure another notch in the overtimes, out-shooting UAH 12-2 in the extra 20 minutes, but reserve keeper Geoffrey Merry made 10 saves after coming in at halftime, including six in the second overtime.

For the game, the Bucs out-shot UAH 33-8, including an 18-4 edge in shots on goal.

With the tie, the Bucs wrap up second place in the GSC standings with nine points.  First-place Montevallo has 10, while No. 18 West Florida has seven points heading into Friday's game at Montevallo.  With CBU's 2-0 win at UWF earlier this month, the Bucs hold the tiebreaker.

The Bucs step out of GSC play for a pair of games before next weekend's GSC Tournament.  They will host Crichton Saturday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Day before finishing the regular season with a trip to Martin Methodist Monday night at 7 p.m.
