Box Score FLORENCE, Ala.—Christian Brothers University freshman forward
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark., Catholic HS) needed just one game to put his name in the record book as he scored a team-high 22 points in the Bucs' 78-65 win at North Alabama Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs (1-0) seized control with a 15-0 run in the middle of the first half, turning a 10-8 North Alabama (0-1) lead into a 23-10 CBU edge.
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) started the run with a layup.
Connor Wetzel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) followed with a layup and a three, and Drake knocked down the first of his five three-pointers with 8:10 remaining in the half to make it 18-10. A layup and a three-pointer by
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) capped the run, and the Bucs' lead never dropped below 10 points again.
The Bucs built the lead to 19 points at 33-14 on a Warner jumper with 3:38 remaining in the first half, and they reached a 19-point edge twice in the second half, both on Drake three-pointers. After the final 19-point margin at 55-36, the Lions made a run to try to get back into the game, scoring nine straight to cut the margin to 55-45 on a Jared Strode three-pointer with 9:36 remaining.
But Warner answered with a three-point play to put the Bucs back in front by 13 points, and the Bucs salted the victory away.
Drake knocked down five three-pointers in his first game, tying for the 13th-most in school history. He was the first Buc to make five threes in a game since Wetzel knocked down five exactly a year ago in a win over LeMoyne-Owen. As a team, the Bucs made 14 threes, 11th-most in school history, and their 36 three-point attempts rank sixth in the record books.
Warner had 16 points and nine rebounds in his first start, and
Jimmy Palmer (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS) scored 12 points on four three-pointers in 33 minutes. Wetzel added 11 before fouling out in 21 minutes.
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) had nine points, eight rebounds, and four assists in 40 minutes, and
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to go with six points and six assists as he played all 40 minutes.
Strode led North Alabama with a game-high 29, while Daviel Clements had 11.
The Bucs shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58), including 38.9 percent (14-of-36) from three-point range, to UNA's 41 percent (25-of-61) and 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from beyond the arc. The Bucs held a commanding 47-30 edge on the boards, including a 15-8 margin in offensive rebounds, but they committed 12 turnovers to the Lions' seven.
The Bucs return to action next weekend in the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic at Northern Kentucky University's Bank of Kentucky Center. The Bucs face No. 14 Tusculum (Tenn.) at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, before playing either Lake Erie or NKU Saturday night in the tournament's second day.
