Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga.—For the second straight game, the Christian Brothers University Bucs lost a heartbreaker on the road on a shot at the buzzer, losing 56-55 Tuesday night as West Georgia's Vojin Svilar made the game-winning three-pointer off an inbounds play as time expired.
The Bucs (2-2) had led most of the game, building an 18-10 lead in the first 12 minutes. The Wolves (2-2) took their first lead of the night as Deion Sims capped a 6-0 run with a bucket that gave UWG a 39-37 lead with 11:51 remaining.
Neither team would lead by more than four points again over the final 12 minutes, but the Bucs appeared to have things in control as
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) sank a jumper in the lane with 1:21 remaining to lift the Bucs to a 55-53 lead. UWG missed a pair of free throws, and
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) grabbed the rebound to give the Bucs a chance to extend the lead in the game's final minute, but the Bucs were unable to convert on the possession.
Svilar went for a layup to tie with six seconds left, which
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) blocked out of bounds. After a pair of timeouts to set up the final play, Svilar made the game-winning three off a Jeremy Smith assist.
Warner led the Bucs with 19 points as he struggled through an uncharacteristic off night, making just five of 20 shots. He also grabbed eight rebounds with five assists and two blocks. Couvion scored 13 points with seven rebounds, while Dennis turned in his first double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
John Pringle led the Wolves with 16 points. Svilar scored 12, while Gavin Field added 11.
UWG shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from three-point range, while the Bucs were 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the floor and 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from beyond the arc.
The Wolves out-rebounded the Bucs 38-35, including a 13-11 edge in offensive rebounds. Both teams committed 11 turnovers.
The Bucs return home Saturday at 4 p.m. as they take on North Alabama. The 2008-09 Bucs will receive their NCAA Division II South Regional Championship rings at halftime of the 2 p.m. women's game.
