Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo., Clayton HS) and
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark., Catholic HS) combined for 37 points to lead the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 91-68 win over Blue Mountain Saturday at Canale Arena.
Early on, Warner put on a show, scoring 18 of the Bucs' first 20 points to help CBU (5-3) open a small lead early. Drake, in his first game back in the lineup after missing four games due to a family emergency, scored 12 points in a 15-2 run over just 3:12 as the Bucs pulled away, with his fastbreak layup giving CBU a 45-24 lead with 2:33 remaining in the half. The Toppers (0-13) never came closer than 16 points again.
Warner finished with 23 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in 28 minutes, while Drake scored 14 in 22 minutes off the bench.
Jimmy Palmer (Hernando, Miss./Hernando HS),
Alex Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS), and
Kevin Doran (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added eight each for the Bucs.
Josh McCalmon led Blue Mountain with 15 points, while LaKendrick McCullum had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bucs shot 46.2 percent (36-of-78) for the game, but they struggled from three-point range, making just 27.8 percent (10-of-36) of their threes. The Bucs held Blue Mountain to 28.8 percent (19-of-66) overall and 15.6 percent (5-of-32) from three-point range.
The Bucs out-rebounded BMC 58-38, including a 19-14 edge in offensive rebounds. The Bucs committed 15 turnovers while forcing 10.
The Bucs return to the court Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they take on Williams Baptist.
