Box Score MEMPHIS—The No. 8 Christian Brothers University Bucs won their second straight Gulf South Conference West Division Championship Saturday afternoon as they won 65-63 over Arkansas Tech.
Midway through the first half, the Bucs (22-5, 11-3 GSC West) appeared well on their way to victory, taking a 22-14 lead with 7:17 remaining in the half as
Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) threw down a fast-break dunk to cap a 10-0 run.
Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) scored the first eight points of the run with a dunk, two free throws, a layup, and a jumper.
The Wonder Boys (19-8, 9-5) never allowed the Bucs' lead to grow past 12 points, however, and they made a furious run in the final seven minutes. A
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) tip-in had given the Bucs a 57-47 lead with 7:17 remaining, but ATU's Dusan Radivojevic single-handedly brought the Wonder Boys back into the game, scoring 13 straight ATU points to bring them within two. He made a layup, three three-pointers, and a pair of free throws during the run to cut the Bucs' lead to 62-60 with 4:11 remaining.
Kohs made one of two free throws for the Bucs at the 2:00 mark to extend the lead to three, but Thiago Cordeiro's three-point play with 51 seconds remaining knotted the game at 63.
With the game tied, Peyton missed a floater in the lane with 15 seconds left, but he made up for it quickly. The Wonder Boys tried for a fast-break off the missed shot, but Peyton stole the outlet pass, and he was fouled with 9.5 seconds remaining. He made both free throws, and the Wonder Boys missed a three-pointer and a put-back in the final seconds.
Kohs scored a game-high 24 points with 10 rebounds, three blocks, and three assists as he played the final regular-season game of his career. Peyton scored 17 points with four steals, while freshman
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
Radivojevic and Brandon Friedel scored 18 points each to lead the Wonder Boys, while Chad Henderson added 12.
With the win and Delta State's 84-68 loss at Henderson State, the Bucs clinch their second consecutive GSC West Championship, and their first-ever outright GSC West title. The Bucs will start GSC Tournament play Friday night against the winner of the play-in game between the West's No. 5 seed and the East's No. 4 seed.
