Box Score MEMPHIS—The No. 10 Christian Brothers University Bucs out-scored No. 22 Arkansas-Monticello 12-2 over the final 3:22 as they won 51-43 Thursday night to stay in first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division.
The Bucs (18-3, 7-1) trailed 41-39 until
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) buried a three-pointer from the right corner to give CBU the lead for good with 3:22 to play. Couvion scored again on a back-door layup with 2:06 remaining, and the Bucs salted it away as
Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line in the final 39 seconds. The Boll Weevils (16-5, 5-3) only scored once in the final 3:45, when Raymond Wright scored on a tip-in with 8.0 seconds remaining.
Early on, the Bucs appeared well on their way to victory, taking a 23-12 lead late in the first half after Peyton's layup capped a 12-3 run, but UAM clawed back into the game with a 13-4 run on both sides of the halftime break.
Peyton scored a game-high 16 points with six rebounds, while
Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) added game-highs of nine rebounds and seven assists to his 13 points. Couvion scored eight points with four assists.
Bernard Seymour scored 16 for the Boll Weevils, and Wright scored 12 points with nine rebounds.
The Bucs held UAM to 35.6 percent (16-of-45) from the floor and forced 13 turnovers. The Bucs shot 36.7 percent (18-of-49), but they made 40 percent (8-of-20) of their three-pointers.
The Bucs remain alone atop the GSC West standings at 7-1, a game ahead of Delta State and two games in front of UAM.
After a week off, the Bucs return to action next Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they host Ouachita Baptist.
