Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—In a script almost identical to their last loss, the No. 15 Christian Brothers University Bucs built a commanding first-half lead but lost after a poor second half, ending their magical season at 25-7 after a 70-62 loss to No. 4 Augusta State in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Wednesday afternoon at the MassMutual Center.
The Bucs (25-7) totally dominated early, building a 21-9 lead in the first 14 minutes and taking a 32-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
But in the second half, the Jaguars (30-4) torched the Bucs for 52 points, shooting 62.5 percent for the half as they rallied for the victory, eerily similar to Harding's 60-53 win over the Bucs in the GSC Quarterfinals three weeks earlier.
The Bucs' double-digit lead held until a Caleb Brown three-point play cut the margin to nine with 15:40 remaining. Daniel Dixon followed with a three-pointer, and the game-changing 25-10 run was underway. Once they took the lead, the Jaguars steadily added to it, extending the lead to 10 points twice in the final minute.
Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) scored a game-high 20 points for the Bucs, and All-American center
Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) scored 15.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) added nine points, four assists, three steals, and three rebounds before fouling out in 37 minutes.
Ben Madgen scored seveon of his team-high 16 points at the free throw line in the final minutes for the Jaguars. Fred Brathwaite scored 15, while Brown added 12.
The Jaguars shot 51.2 percent (22-of-43) for the game, the highest percentage an opponent has shot against the Bucs this season. ASU out-rebounded the Bucs 31-17, including a 9-6 edge on the offensive boards. The Bucs forced 12 turnovers while committing seven.
The Bucs tied their school record for wins in a season with 25, and their three-year win total of 68 is the highest for a three-year span in school history.
The loss ends the CBU career of five seniors: Kohs, Peyton,
Brandon Shane (Greenfield, Tenn./Greenfield HS),
Colin Flynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS), and
Zach Welter (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS), who played the final 29 seconds together.
