Box Score SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—Fifth-seeded Harding used a 24-7 run over a 10-minute stretch beginning late in the first half as they came back for a 60-53 upset win over the top-seeded and 12th-ranked Christian Brothers University Bucs in the quarter finals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at the DeSoto Civic Center Friday night.
The Bucs (22-6) seemed in total control in the first half, going on a 16-2 run to take an 18-8 lead on a
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) three-pointer with 7:13 remaining in the first half. They extended the lead to a dozen with a
Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) bucket with 4:21 remaining in the half to put the Bucs ahead 23-11.
From there, the Bucs struggled to protect the ball, committing 15 of their 20 turnovers over the game's final 24 minutes. The Bisons (18-11) answered with the decisive 24-7 run, taking a 35-30 lead on a pair of Steven Barnett free throws with 13:02 remaining. The Bisons extended the lead to 46-38 on a Kevin Brown layup with 6:54 remaining.
The Bucs made one last run, out-scoring Harding 10-3 over the next three minutes to pull within a point as
Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) knocked down a three-pointer, but the Bisons out-scored the Bucs 11-5 over the final three minutes to seal the victory.
Kohs led the Bucs with 16 points, while Peyton scored 11.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his six points.
Barnett led Harding with 19 points, and Trent Morgan scored 10.
The Bisons, seeded fifth from the GSC West, advance to the semifinals tomorrow night against the west's three seed, Arkansas Tech. The Bucs will return to the court in the NCAA Division II South Regional March 14. The Bucs' seed, opponent, and site will be announced Sunday night.
